UK Poetry Slam Finals 2014

Here is where I spent my 5th of December 2014

This weekend’s UK slam poetry finals showcased some gems of the spoken word scene. Run by Farrago Poetry and held at the Courtyard Theatre in London, the stage popped with styles, rhythms, themes, and a healthy dose of experimental form (Samuel Cole).

Tom Gill, UK Slam Champion Tom Gill, UK Slam Champion

Sophia Walker delivered some hard-hitting poems to win the London title but the overall UK winner, who kept pulling the stellar performances out of his back pocket all night long, was up-and-coming Mancunian poet Tom Gill.

I could write an essay on the night’s poetry, but will limit myself to declaring that Fikayo Balogun’s words are so smooth, her imagery so intense and her themes so profound that she is surely destined for recognition on the mainstream poetry scene, and that Tom Gill is a stage legend in the making.
